Bass Pro Shops Continues Sponsorship of National Hunting and Fishing Day

29 Aug
NHFD set for September 24, 2016

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (August 29, 2016) – Bass Pro Shops is more than just a store that is a gateway to the great outdoors. The industry leader in conservation efforts is once again leading the way and partnering with National Hunting and Fishing Day (NHF Day). Each year, hunting contributes more than $38.3 billion to the economy and supports more than 680,000 jobs. Bass Pro Shops continues its legacy as an organization ready to support sportsmen and women by its sponsorship of NHF Day.
Hunting continues to rank as one of the safest outdoor activities in America, and an overwhelming majority of Americans support hunting.
“Bass Pro Shops never fails to support sportsmen and women,” said Misty Mitchell, national coordinator, National Hunting and Fishing Day. “Their continued support of NHF Day shows a clear determination to give back to conservation efforts of the company that date back to 1971.”
National Hunting and Fishing Day is set-aside for sportsmen to celebrate those conservation efforts. Each year, NHF Day is set to take place on the fourth Saturday in September. This year NHF Day falls on Sept. 24.
Each year sportsmen and women are funding more projects that enable more public access areas to be open. Through license sales and excise taxes on equipment, hunters and anglers pay for most fish and wildlife conservation programs. On average, hunters spend $1,638 every year on the sport. Portions of these funds are allocated to support conservation. NHF Day is dedicated to celebrating those efforts.
“Bass Pro Shops is dedicated to inspiring people to enjoy, love and conserve the great outdoors,” said Martin MacDonald, Bass Pro Shops director of conservation. “We are honored to participate in National Hunting and Fishing Day to celebrate our rich outdoor heritage and pass it on to future generations.”
Generating more awareness for conservation, NHF Day is dedicated to spreading the word through any avenue possible and social media is one of the largest stages to do this and the hashtag #1conservationist will help them accomplish this goal.

Visitors are encouraged to visit https://www.facebook.com/nhfday for a wide variety of information including a comprehensive overview of NHF Day, sponsor information and event planning details.

TruckVault Pro Kim Rhode Makes History In Rio

25 Aug
Six consecutive Olympic Medal finishes

SEDRO WOOLLEY, Wash. (August 25, 2016) – TruckVault Pro and USA Shooting Team Member Kim Rhode became the second Olympian to medal at six consecutive Olympic Games with a Bronze Medal in Women’s Skeet at the 2016 Summer Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. Rhode’s Bronze-Medal match ended in a shoot-off between Rhode and China’s Wei Meng.

Kim Rhode and her son Carter shortly after winning
her Bronze Medal in Rio.

Rhode arrived at the 2016 Olympic Games as a five-time Olympic medalist and the defending Gold Medal winner for Women’s Skeet. With her Bronze Medal in Rio de Janeiro, Rhode became the first U.S. Olympian to medal at six consecutive Olympic Games in an individual sport. She also became the first U.S. Olympian to compete on five different continents and joined Italian luger, Armin Zögger, as the only Olympians to medal at six consecutive games.

“It was never part of my plan to make the history books” said Rhode.  “I was simply trying my best at every event and every practice and this achievement is a result of that.”

Rhode scored 72 points in the qualifying match next to China’s Meng who scored 73. Rhode secured her chance at the Bronze Medal during the semi-final match where she lost by two points to Italy’s Chiara Cainero and Diana Bacosi who scored 16 and 15 points, respectively.

The Bronze-Medal match ended in a 15-to-15 point draw between the U.S. and the Chinese shooter, resulting in a shoot-off. During the shoot-off, Rhode missed a shot after the ref called an irregular target, which allowed Meng the chance to win the match. Rhode got one more chance after Meng also missed a shot in her next round. Rhode secured the bronze when Meng missed a second target which ended the match.

“TruckVault congratulates Rhode on her amazing accomplishment,” said TruckVault Director of Marketing Don Fenton. “We are and were proud to support her no matter the results from the Olympics. Her can-do, never-give-up attitude is an inspiration to me and the employees of TruckVault everyday. Congratulations Kim, you deserve it!”

TruckVault partnered with Rhode in 2013 as she started her journey towards her sixth Olympic Medal. In 2008, Rhode’s prized competition shotgun was stolen from the backseat of her vehicle. TruckVault provided her the perfect secure, lockable solution to protect her valuable shotguns.

Stachowski and Bruce Win Lucas Oil Angler of the Year Awards for Cabela’s National Walleye Tour

25 Aug
Pro- and co-anglers win Lucas Oil AOY Rings and paid entry fees for 2017 season
NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. (August 25, 2016) – The 2016 season for the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour (NWT) came to a close earlier this month on Lake Oahe in South Dakota with pro-angler Ed Stachowski and co-angler Josh Bruce rising to the top and winning the Lucas Oil Angler of the Year (AOY) titles. Along with custom Lucas Oil AOY rings, both anglers earned paid entry fees for the 2017 NWT season.

The Lucas Oil Angler of the Year marks the first major title in Stachowski’s five-year pro career.
“To do better than everyone over the course of a season is pretty huge to me,” said Stachowski. “It proves that I have the skills to compete on any body of water.”

Pro-angler Ed Stachowski holds with his Pro-Angler of the Year trophy
at the Cabela’s National Walleye Tour championship event
at Mobridge, S.D., on Aug. 8.

The NWT AOY goes to the angler who consistently performs throughout the season. Stachowski took eighth place at Lake Erie and followed with 11th-place at Winnebago. The angler’s 35th-place at Sturgeon Bay put the potential title in jeopardy.

“I was sitting in second place behind my travel partner after Winnebago and felt I had a shot,” said Stachowski. “The third event made me a bit nervous. I scraped into the money there. I haven’t had a good history at Sturgeon Bay.”

Stachowski regrouped and showed up strong at the championship event on Lake Oahe with an 11th-place finish to wrap up the title.

“It’s a monstrous accomplishment for me,” said Stachowski. “It’s a huge honor with the caliber of fishermen on the NWT. That being said, I didn’t go into the tournament trying to win AOY. I was trying to win the championship. To just miss the top 10 is bittersweet. Still, it’s a huge feeling of accomplishment. I’ve had some good tournaments, but this is the first time that I’ve put it together for the whole year.”

Josh Bruce, of Williston, North Dakota, won the NWT Co-Angler of the Year title. The angler fished two NWT events last year and competed in his first full season in 2016.

“It’s a great feeling,” said Bruce. “I’ve had my ups and downs through the year, but it kind of worked out.”

Co-anglers are randomly paired with different pros each day of a tournament. Over the course of the 2016 season, Bruce soaked up knowledge from the pro-anglers on new techniques and how to fish unfamiliar waters.

“It’s a total different experience,” said Bruce. “You learn so many different things and get to fish these different bodies of water. That’s one of the main reasons for fishing as a co-angler. It’s a whole new ballgame. You’re finding fish in spots you hadn’t thought about.”

Being paired with so many different pro-anglers also gave Bruce insight to the mental aspect of managing expectations and fighting through a tough day of fishing.

“Some guys have rough days and that happens to everyone,” said Bruce. “Some handle it totally different than others. You feed off of it. If he is feeling confident, you just feel it.”

With paid entry fees paid for the 2017 season, Bruce hopes to follow up his 2016 performance with another title and is keeping the possibility of turning pro in the back of his mind.

“I am definitely going to run on the co-angler side next year,” said Bruce. “Turning pro is out of the question for me right now, but you got to play it year by year. I hope to someday get to that level.”

NHF DAY IS ONLY A MONTH AWAY

25 Aug
Help Support Conservation Efforts on September 24, 2016

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (August 24, 2016) – Only a month away, National Hunting and Fishing Day is the perfect opportunity to celebrate the conservation efforts of outdoorsmen and women across the nation. Outdoor enthusiasts everywhere are encouraged to participate at their nearest event. To find the event closest to you, visit http://www.nhfday.org.

Always the fourth Saturday in September, NHF Day 2016 is set to take place on September 24th this year.

Help us celebrate this special annual “holiday” established by Congress in 1972 to recognize hunters, anglers and recreational shooters for their leadership and contributions to the conservation in America. For example, through dues and contributions to conservation organizations, hunters give an additional $280 million annually for wildlife and habitat.

Nobody does more for fish, wildlife and habitat than traditional outdoor enthusiasts. Communicating this message is a daily goal for all of us at Wonders of Wildlife museum-the official home of NHF Day-in Springfield, Mo.

National Hunting and Fishing Day is one of the easiest ways to recognize the conservation efforts of hunters and fishermen across the nation. It is also a great way to get youth involved in our great heritage.

This year, Johnny Morris a lifelong sportsman with a passion for hunting, fishing and outdoor recreation is the honorary chair for NHF Day. Morris is one of the country’s foremost leaders working to ensure natural habitats, wildlife and the outdoors remain healthy for future generations to protect and enjoy.

“America’s sportsmen and women are among our nation’s most active conservationists and it’s important we recognize and celebrate everything they do to protect outdoor habitat and ensure thriving populations of wildlife,” said Morris. “I’m proud to lend my support and raise awareness for hunters and anglers, America’s conservation heroes through National Hunting and Fishing Day.”

The first to suggest an official day of thanks to sportsmen was Ira Joffe, owner of Joffe’s Gun Shop in Upper Darby, Pa. In 1970, Pennsylvania Gov. Raymond Shafer adopted Joffe’s idea and created “Outdoor Sportsman’s Day” in the state.

NHF Day could not happen without the help of great sponsors. The list of sponsors for National Hunting and Fishing Day 2016 includes: Bass Pro Shops, NSSF, NRA, Yamaha, GunBroker, Izaak Walton League, Keep America Fishing, Outdoor Sportsman Group, Berkley, Shakespeare, Wonders of Wildlife, Smith and Wesson, Realtree, Ducks Unlimited, Cabela’s, NWTF and the Congressional Sportsmen’s Foundation.

Ranger Pro Cory Johnston Wins Costa FLW Northern Division Finale on Oneida Lake

25 Aug
Canadian angler adds division’s Angler of the Year Award

FLIPPIN, Ark. (August 25, 2016) – Ranger Boats Pro Cory Johnston won the final Costa FLW Series Northern Division event on Oneida Lake with a three-day total of 50 pounds, 4 ounces. The angler won $77,778, including a Ranger Z518C with a 200 horsepower outboard.

The competitors enjoyed calm winds and clear waters on the first two days of competition. Johnston sight-fished to rock piles with a wide variety of baits, including tubes, top-waters, Senkos and drop shots. Johnston’s extensive pre-fishing proved advantageous to finding quality fish during competition.

“I spent eight days practicing, and that really helped,” said Johnston. “The first few days of practice it was calm. I found a lot of isolated rock piles and that was key to where I was catching all my bass.”

Johnston entered the final day with more than a two-pound lead but didn’t let the pressure of leading change up his game plan.

“I just do my thing,” said Johnston. “It doesn’t really matter if I am in first or last. I still go out with the same mindset.”

The remaining top-10 competitors fishing the final day were met with high winds and three-foot waves.

“The wind dirtied up the water so I had to rely on my electronics because I couldn’t physically see the rocks anymore,” said Johnston. “I was blind-casting to these rock piles.”

Without being able to sight-fish, Johnston made small changes to his presentations and relied on precision casting to land quality fish.

“I obviously couldn’t use a top-water,” said Johnston. “I used a lot of bottom presentations to drag across the rocks.”

At the end of the final day, Johnston was one of only three anglers to bring in a five-fish limit. His 14 pounds, 1 ounce bested the nearest competitor’s overall weight by four pounds.

The win at Oneida earned Johnston the Northern Division Angler of the Year Award, giving the angler $2,000 and paid deposits for the 2017 season. This is Johnston’s third divisional AOY title in the past five years, positioning him as one of the elite anglers on the Costa FLW Tour.

“It’s a great feeling because it shows consistency throughout the year,” said Johnston. “That’s one of the things I feel I am good at – being consistent.”

The AOY award highlights Johnston’s fishing prowess to reliably finish high on the leaderboard, but the angler gives credit to his Ranger Z521C for always performing each day.

“I put in a lot of hours on the water and to have a boat that’s extremely reliable so you know you will get you where you need to be is a great feeling,” said Johnston. “I pound it hard on rough waters and to not have to worry about dependability definitely helps. Ranger is hands down, the best boat out there.”

New Hampshire State Police Selects SIG SAUER® Electro-Optic for Patrol Rifles

25 Aug

N.H. Patrol Division to Issue ROMEO4 Red-dot Sights

Newington, NH (August 24, 2016) – SIG SAUER, Inc., announced today that the New Hampshire State Police has selected the SIG SAUER ROMEO4™ as its new duty optic.

Following a detailed examination period, the state police agency selected the ROMEO4 red-dot sight to serve as the primary optic on all patrol rifles. The optic’s performance during testing and its advanced list of professional-grade features earned it high marks during the examination period.

“We are honored to be awarded this contract by the New Hampshire State Police,” noted Tom Jankiewicz, Executive Vice President of Law Enforcement Sales for SIG SAUER. “Our optics line is held to the same exacting standards as the company’s premium pistols and rifles, so it comes as no surprise that this renowned agency in the law enforcement community would make such a selection.”

Unlike holographic aiming systems, the ROMEO4 utilizes a proprietary ultra-efficient red LED illumination system for superior daylight visibility with extended run times. The extremely strong and lightweight aircraft grade CNC aluminum housing ensures a lifetime of reliable service. All ROMEO4 sights are parallax-free, ensuring that point-of-aim equals point-of-impact. The SIG SAUER ROMEO4 red dot is designed to remain parallel to the bore of the firearm regardless of the viewing angle. This intuitive design also allows users to keep both eyes open during operation.

For extended use, the ROMEO4 features the SIG SAUER Motion Activated Illumination System (MOTAC™). This unique system activates through motion-sensing technology, powering up illumination when the unit senses motion and powering down when the red-dot is not in use, extending battery life. Additional features available on the ROMEO4 include a dual reticle option, allowing officers to toggle between a 2 MOA red dot and a circle dot (2 MOA Circle-Dot/65 MOA).

Each ROMEO4 is fully supported by the company’s Infinite Guarantee™.

USFWS Disappoints DSC with Final Rule for Alaska Wildlife Refuges

25 Aug

DALLAS – DSC is dissatisfied with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s (USFWS) final rule pertaining to management of wildlife in Alaska’s National Wildlife Refuges. The ruling takes away Alaska’s authority to set predator control regulations and other established means and methods of hunting in the state’s 77 million acres of refuges. The rule goes against decades of legal precedent and pre-empts Alaska’s authority to manage its wildlife.

“The impact of this ruling could be felt for generations and may possibly be the first of many government overreaches that directly affect our traditional hunting heritage,” said DSC Executive Director Ben Carter. “Wildlife Refuges in Alaska will now be under the direct influence of a governmental body that has routinely capitulated to the emotions of anti-hunters.”

With the declaration, the USFWS has usurped Alaska’s authority to manage the publicly owned wildlife. Not only has Congress previously directed that the state has the primary authority to managing rules for wildlife, the USFWS ruling conflicts with the provisions of the Alaska National Interest Lands Conservation Act.

DSC agrees with U.S. Congressman Don Young, of Alaska, when he characterized this ruling as “an unilateral power grab.” This intervention could stand as a dangerous precedent for future exploitations to take control of traditional and successful state management of wildlife.

“Hunters across America should take notice of this evolving situation,” said Carter. “Our rights to hunt are being methodically eroded. If we don’t protect these rights now, it is only a matter of time before we lose our proud heritage.”

About DSC
A member of IUCN, DSC is a mission-focused conservation organization, funded by hunters from around the world. Heiser, Morris Win Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit Devils Lake Qualifier

24 Aug

Berkley pros best field with two-day total of 44 pounds

COLUMBIA, S.C. (August 23, 2016) – Troy Morris and Corey Heiser, of Fargo, N.D., brought in a two-day total of 44 pounds to the win the Cabela’s Masters Walleye Circuit’s regular season qualifier presented by Berkley on Devils Lake this past weekend.

The win marked the pair’s second straight Cabela’s MWC Devils Lake qualifier victory. The win was worth $19,433 including $11,650 in first-place cash and $3,770 in cash from the option pot, plus the $1,000 Ranger Cup bonus, $500 Lowrance Electronics contingency, $813 from the MWC Big Fish Pot, a $500 Air Wave gift certificate and $200 reel bonus. They also won a $1,000 Cabela’s National Team Championship Prize Package including paid entry into the 2017 NTC, travel stipend, team jerseys and plaques.

Their presentation included ripping the jigs sharply upward, then allowing them to swim and flutter back down. They used 14-pound-test Berkley FireLine mainline with a 2-foot leader of 17-pound Berkley 100 Percent Fluorocarbon that limited tangles and helped prevent bite-offs from northern pike.

On day two, the duo caught fish trolling the ever-popular size 7 Berkley Flicker Shads on lead-core line in 23 to 25 feet of water on the main lake.

“We are really excited for this win,” said Heiser. “This win is a big one to prove that what we did last year wasn’t a fluke. We went into this tournament with the motivation to win it solely on artificial baits. I think we proved that live bait is no match for Berkley Gulp! and PowerBait. The baits that Berkley is putting out right now are far more advanced than anything that is out there.”

Another Berkley pro team came in second place. Jeff Trana and Rick Darling had a great showing just missing first place with a two-day weight of 43 pounds two ounces. For the finish, the Berkley team cashed a check for $5,800.
