OUTDOOR CHANNEL TO SPONSOR NATIONAL HUNTING AND FISHING DAY

29 Jul

NHFD to Take Place September 27, 2014

SPRINGFIELD, Mo. (July 29, 2014) — Outdoor Channel is a staple in the outdoors. Through their multiple outdoor programs, Outdoor Channel displays its continued support of conservation efforts. The storied outdoors company is active in conserving our lands and waterways. Outdoor Channel is once again sponsoring National Hunting and Fishing Day.

NHF-Day-logoNational Hunting and Fishing Day is set-aside for sportsmen to celebrate those conservation efforts. Each year, NHF Day is set to take place on the fourth Saturday in September. This year NHF Day falls on September 27.

This year, American country music star, award-winning TV host and former soldier Craig Morgan is stepping forward to help promote NHF Day with partners like Gunbroker.com. He has been slated to serve as the honorary chairman for National Hunting and Fishing Day.

Morgan is well known as an avid outdoorsman and also takes pride in serving others. He has made eleven overseas tours to entertain our troops and received the 2006 USO Merit Award for his tireless support of our U.S. soldiers and their families. The Tennessee native is also host of the award-winning “Craig Morgan All Access Outdoors,” on the Outdoor Channel. The high-octane hit reality show gives viewers an all access, backstage pass to Morgan’s travels as he and his crew pursue big thrills and big laughs across the globe in a quest for the ultimate outdoor adventure.

The first to suggest an official day of thanks to sportsmen was Ira Joffe, owner of Joffe’s Gun Shop in Upper Darby, Pa. In 1970, Pennsylvania Gov. Raymond Shafer adopted Joffe’s idea and created “Outdoor Sportsman’s Day” in the state.

With determined prompting from the National Shooting Sports Foundation, the concept soon emerged on the floor of the U.S. Senate. In June 1971, Sen. Thomas McIntyre, N.H., introduced Joint Resolution 117 authorizing National Hunting and Fishing Day on the fourth Saturday of every September. Rep. Bob Sikes, Fla., introduced an identical measure in the House. In early 1972, Congress unanimously passed both bills.

“Outdoor Channel has always been a great supporter of conservation,” said Misty Mitchell, director of Conservation for Wonders of Wildlife. “If not for conservation, sportsmen would not get an opportunity to enjoy the outdoor sports. Their continued support of NHF Day goes beyond what is expected. Outdoor Channel is always seeking to become the leader in the conservation community.”

The list of sponsors for National Hunting and Fishing Day 2014 includes Wonders of Wildlife, National Shooting Sports Foundation, Bass Pro Shops, Realtree, Yamaha, GunBroker.com, Izaak Walton League, Ducks Unlimited, Limit Out Production, Scout, National Wild Turkey Federation, Smith & Wesson and Outdoor Channel.

Oliverio, Holloway Win Lucas Oil IFA Pro-Am Redfish Challenge at Jacksonville, Florida

29 Jul

Premier, high-stakes fishing event awards $75,000 in total cash payout

MOUNTAIN HOME, Ark. (July 28, 2014) – John Oliverio, of Brandon, Florida, weighed a three-day total of 38.52 pounds of redfish to win the Lucas Oil IFA Pro-Am Redfish Challenge at Jacksonville, Florida, on July 27. The high-stakes event, presented by Cabela’s, featured many of the sport’s biggest names and will air nationally on NBC Sports Network, Pursuit Channel, the Texas Channel and Fox Sports Net Southwest later this year.

First-place pro-angler John Oliverio (left) and first-place co-angler Dewey Holloway (right) pose with their trophies at the Lucas Oil IFA Pro-Am Redfish Challenge at Jacksonville, Fla., on July 27.

The pro-am format continues to be a hit with anglers accustomed to fishing traditional team events. For his efforts on the pro side, Oliverio won $27,250 in cash while Dewey Holloway, of Fort White, Florida, took home the $4,000 co-angler first-place prize with a 36.24-pound three-day total.

As the president of JL Marine Systems and the creative force behind the Power-Pole Shallow Water Anchor, Oliverio has a history with the IFA Redfish Tour. Before the Power-Pole was a household name, Oliverio showed off his new anchor to IFA anglers.

Having fished the IFA Redfish Tour for 13 years, Oliverio knows a thing or two about catching redfish. The angler leaned on his past experience to blow past the competition.

“I’ve been fishing Jacksonville for probably better than ten years, maybe fifteen years,” said Oliverio. “The area I fished is my area basically. I’ve been patterning that area since I started fishing Jacksonville.”

By timing his pre-fishing outing two weeks before the tournament date, the angler ensured he would be fishing in similar tide conditions during the competition.

“I like to go a month and two weeks before,” said Oliverio. “Every two weeks the tides duplicate themselves. In Jacksonville, if you pre-fish the week before, it’s kind of useless because by the time the tournament starts it’s different. When I looked at the tides for this tournament, it was the perfect tides for my spots.

Concentrating on the Fernandina area, the angler fished Berkley Gulp! shrimp on a jighead underneath a popping cork in the same locations each day but caught his daily limits in separate spots.

“The first day we caught our fish on the incoming tide and at 8:00 we had thirteen pounds,” said Oliverio. “I didn’t even want to fish any of my other spots. Then the tide went real low, and I knew that day would probably be the only day I could fish my low water spot. So I went there and in about ten minutes we upgraded both of the fish. We went from thirteen to put fifteen and a half in the boat.”

Oliverio took off on day two with a 2.28-pound lead. Partnered with co-angler Dewey Holloway, the pair brought in 12.98 pounds to retain the lead for both anglers in their respective categories.

On day three of the tournament, the anglers were paired again due to their first-place status. Going out with a commanding 7.66-pound lead for the pro category, the anglers brought in a 10.20-pound limit, giving Oliverio an overall tournament lead of 11.10 pounds.

A familiar name on the IFA Redfish Tour leaderboard, Eddie Adams, of Metairie, Louisiana, weighed a three-day total of 27.42 to take second place and $8,100 in winnings. The angler reported tough fishing conditions while he concentrated in the Sister Creek area with Berkley Gulp! and top-water baits.

Pro-angler, John Ochs, of Englewood, Florida, rounded out the top three for the pro-anglers with 25.49 pounds and took home $4,000 in winnings.

Second-place co-angler Kelly Causey, of Lizella, Georgia, finished the event with 28.48 pounds and took home $2,000. Rusty Jewett, of Clearwater, Florida, only brought in one fish on day two. However, three of his four fished weighed during competition were over seven pounds. The combined weight was enough to push him into third place, which paid the angler $1,200.

Eddie Adams leads the Lucas Oil IFA Pro-Am Redfish Challenge Pro-Angler of the Year standings with 399 points. Jay Withers is in a close second with 392 points, while Blake Smith follows with 388.

Dewey Holloway leads the standing for the Co-Angler of the Year award with 396 points. Kelley Causey follows two points behind and Rennie Clark just one more point behind with 393 points.

The Pro- and Co-Angler of the Year awards will be determined at the final Lucas Oil IFA Pro-Am Redfish Challenge event at Slidell, Louisiana, on Sept. 12-14 Winners of the IFA Pro-Am Redfish Challenge Angler of the Year awards will receive Lucas Oil rings and paid entry fees to each of next year’s IFA Pro-Am events.

Feds to ‘Re-evaluate’ Elephant Policy After Mid-Term Elections

24 Jul

DALLAS (July 24, 2014) – The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service says it will wait until after mid-term elections to “re-evaluate” a controversial new policy on elephant hunting. But conservation groups including Dallas Safari Club (DSC) worry that political gamesmanship in America is already compromising sustainable elephant management in Africa.

DSC logo no text copyYesterday, the agency promised a December review of a suddenly announced ban on importing elephants lawfully hunted in Zimbabwe (and Tanzania) in 2014.

Since the April announcement, DSC has criticized the ban as a politically motivated stunt that would only hinder wildlife conservation and rural communities in Africa. Seeking a reversal, DSC and its partners began providing data and info to help the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service fully understand the situation on the ground in the affected countries.

But the agency on July 23 confirmed the ban and, in the next-to-last paragraph, the suspicious timeline for revisiting it – adding to concerns that politics are trumping science, according to DSC Executive Director Ben Carter.

“Basically, this agency is taking a timeout from science-based conservation policy,” he said.

“All signs point to politics, because science, facts, on-the-ground expertise and even common sense aren’t moving the needle with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service,” said Carter. “By effectually banning lawful hunters, this administration is de-funding a system proven to protect elephants where they are threatened, and manage elephants where they are overpopulated.”

He added, “This agency has offered nothing to replace the lost revenue, knowledge or leadership that hunters provided for elephant conservation in Zimbabwe and Tanzania. It has opened a gate for poachers because now there is less stewardship of a valuable resource.”

Carter said the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service also ignored the Wildlife and Hunting Heritage Conservation Council, a federally recognized advisory body of respected conservation organizations such as Ducks Unlimited, The Nature Conservancy, National Wildlife Federation, Wildlife Management Institute and other groups, universities and agencies. The council had identified flawed processes, logic and data used to formulate the ban.

Nathaniel Linville prepares to release 32-inch Permit caught during Del Brown Invitational.

Linville and partner Captain Aaron Snell, both of Key West, accumulated 800 points including the largest permit of the tournament measuring 32 inches to the fork. The nearest competitors had won the event three of the five previous years but could only score 300 this year. Linville caught his permit on one-piece Hardy Proaxis X 8-foot 10 inch, 8- and 9-weight fly rods.

The Del Brown Invitational is dedicated to the man whom made permit fishing with a fly rod famous. The late Del Brown caught 513 permit on a fly rod during his lifetime, the only angler to record 500 permit on a fly.

The tournament operates on a set of very strict, rigid catch and release rules. Fish are boated, measured, photographed and released alive. Only traditional flies with a single hook are allowed and IGFA rules apply to all tackle and leaders. Fishing is conducted only on the flats with water deeper than 8 feet being off limits. Winners are determined by a point system based on length of each permit.

The first Del Brown Invitational Permit tournament was held in 2001.

Welcoming a New Leader in Fisheries, Wildlife Research

23 Jul

MISSOULA, Mont. – Boone and Crockett Club professional member John Organ has been appointed to lead a key science engine behind the North American Model of Wildlife Conservation.

Boone-Crockett-logoU.S. Geological Survey (USGS) Cooperative Research Units provide most of the applied wildlife and fisheries management research funded through the Pittman-Robertson and Dingell-Johnson Acts. Conservation luminary and Boone and Crockett member Ding Darling established the program in 1935. Currently there are 40 units at universities in 38 states, together staffed by some 120 scientists with graduate faculty appointments.

A committee of cooperators from state fish and wildlife agencies, the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, USGS and Wildlife Management Institute coordinates each unit.

The mission is three-fold: (1) Researching problems affecting wildlife and fisheries; (2) Training the next generation of wildlife and fisheries biologists; and (3) Training and technical assistance to cooperators.

Headquarters are located in Reston, Va., where Organ will serve as director beginning Aug. 25.

“Few people, including sportsmen, are fully unaware of the remarkable system that provides scientific oversight for sustainable-use conservation in our country,” said Bill Demmer, president of Boone and Crockett Club. “Congratulations to our professional colleague John Organ on this important and well-deserved appointment. This is a position on the leading edge of conservation, and we’re pleased to see continued guidance well synchronized with leadership from the sporting community.”

Organ served with the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service Northeast Region for 35 years, starting in Ecological Services and Refuges and working his way up to chief of the Region 5 Wildlife and Sport Fish Restoration program in 2005.

During his career, Organ facilitated research to help guide management of black bear, wild turkey, ruffed grouse, river otter and other species. He led development of national policies on wildlife damage management. He serves on numerous scientific and advisory committees at international, national, state and university levels.

The North American Model of Wildlife Conservation is the world’s most successful system for fisheries and wildlife management. It acknowledges that wildlife belongs to all citizens, and it is implemented in the U.S. with money from hunters and anglers who pay for conservation programs. Science ensures that resources are harvested sustainably. Long before there was an Endangered Species Act, sportsmen used this model to restore threatened species such as whitetail deer, wild turkey, elk, Canada geese and many others. Today this model provides habitat, research, management and law enforcement to benefit both hunted and non-hunted species.

About the Boone and Crockett Club

North America’s first hunting and conservation organization, the Boone and Crockett Club was founded by Theodore Roosevelt in 1887. Its mission is to provide the leadership, stewardship and education needed to promote the conservation and management of wildlife, especially big game and its habitat, to preserve and encourage hunting and to maintain the highest ethical standards of fair chase and sportsmanship. RANGER BOATS’ Z521C, Z118C RECEIVE READERS CHOICE AWARDS FROM GAME & FISH / SPORTSMAN MAGAZINE

21 Jul

Editors praise Ranger’s quality, reliability

FLIPPIN, Ark. (July 18, 2014) – In the March 2014 issue of Game & Fish/Sportsman magazine, the publication unveiled its much-anticipated Readers’ Choice awards, judging hundreds of products based on input from readers around the country.  The results in the boating category were clear, as Ranger walked away with both awards and high praise from readers and editors alike.

ranger_boats_logo“Ranger really dominated the category,” said Game & Fish/Sportsman publisher Peter Gross. “They won both the small and large bass boat categories, which is an amazing feat and shows strong brand loyalty among our hardcore bass anglers. Many readers told us they appreciated Ranger’s consistent quality and reliability.”

The awards are presented in conjunction with ICAST, which takes place July 17-19 in Orlando, Fla. Earlier this year, Game & Fish/Sportsman asked manufacturers to submit new-gear nominees in 26 categories, from rods and reels to raingear and sunglasses. To be considered “new,” gear must be introduced in the last three years. The magazine then queried a sampling of subscribers and e-newsletter recipients to determine their favorite picks. More than 2,000 anglers responded and voted for their favorite gear.

Both the Z521C Comanche and 118C are new models added to the 2014 Ranger lineup. Measuring 21 feet, 7 inches and rated for 250 horsepower, the Ranger Z521C is available with a wide range of precision-matched, factory-rigged outboards and a wealth of customizable options that allow anglers to match their dream rig to their own styles and preferences. The performance-priced Ranger Z118C includes a host of best-in-class features and a custom matched trailer along with several new refinements not seen in previous Z100 Series designs.

“It’s always nice to receive positive feedback from the media, but to be recognized by anglers and customers across the country is really special” said Ranger Boats Vice President of Marketing Bart Schad. “We strive to build a product that people aspire to own and work hard to over-deliver when it comes to product quality and customer satisfaction.”

Game & Fish/Sportsman magazines, which is ABC audited, has more than 400,000 monthly subscribers.
