New Addition to Popular Bolt-action Rifle Line Offers Improved Ergonomics for Smaller Shooters

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 15, 2012) – Thompson/Center Arms announced today that it is offering a new version of its award winning T/C Venture™ bolt-action rifle with the introduction of the new T/C Venture™ Compact. Engineered with a shorter barrel and a slimmer profile, the Venture Compact addresses the needs of smaller statured shooters, including women and youth, by matching them with a proven bolt-action rifle expertly crafted to meet their needs.

A leader in both value and performance, the T/C Venture is well known among experienced hunters for its inherent accuracy and innovative features. Now, the Venture line has been further expanded with new specifications including a 20-inch free floating blued barrel with 5R rifling and target crown. With a reduced weight of 6 ¾ pounds and shortened overall length of 40 ¾ inches, the T/C Venture Compact is appropriately sized for small stature shooters. Providing improved handling in the field, the T/C Venture Compact offers youth hunters a rifle that can be easily altered through its one-inch adjustable spacer included with the stock.

“Since its introduction, the T/C Venture has been the winner of multiple industry awards, each touting the rifle’s innovative features, reliable performance and economical price,” said Craig Cushman, Director of Marketing for Thompson/Center Arms. “With this wide endorsement came the demand for a compact version, ideally suited for youth and female hunters. Understanding the requirements needed, Thompson/Center stepped up to the challenge and delivered a well-balanced, accurate rifle with the debut of the T/C Venture Compact.”

While the rifle dimensions are new, the core of the T/C Venture Compact maintains its guaranteed MOA (Minute of Angle) accuracy, user-adjustable trigger, nitrate coated fat bolt design with 60-degree lift and roller-burnished receiver. Whether at the range or in the field, shooters will appreciate the rifle’s 5R rifling which not only enables Thompson/Center Arms’ MOA guarantee (three shots in a one-inch group or less at 100 yards with premium ammunition), but also reduces copper fouling, providing more consistency in high-use shooting situations and significantly less cleaning time.

The T/C Venture Compact is standard with a classic styled composite stock featuring traction grip panels that give the rifle a striking look and positive feel in adverse weather conditions. For easy installation of optics, the rifle comes standard with Weaver-style scope bases installed. The T/C Venture Compact is packaged with the QD sling swivel studs, a single stack 3+1 detachable nylon magazine and is backed by Thompson/Center’s lifetime warranty.

The new T/C Venture Compact will initially be chambered in .22-250, .243, 7mm-08 and .308. Thompson/Center Arms will introduce the new rifle during the 2012 SHOT Show in Las Vegas, Nevada. THOMPSON/CENTER ARMS INTRODUCES DIMENSION™ BOLT-ACTION PLATFORM

26 Jan

Interchangeable Bolt-Action Rifle Platform Offers Exceptional Versatility, Accuracy and Value

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 15, 2012) – Thompson/Center Arms announced today the introduction of the first production made customizable rifle with the unveiling of the Dimension™ Bolt-Action Platform. Offering the capability to change barrels and stocks through the use of its patent-pending universal receiver, the new Dimension rifle’s revolutionary design allows it to handle small, medium and long action calibers while maintaining the appropriate bolt throw for each caliber.

Providing shooters with the ability to modify the caliber of their rifle by changing no more than four components, the Dimension Bolt-Action Platform brings together an innovative and intuitive design with the very latest advancements in engineering.  Utilizing the Locking Optimized Components (LOC) lettering system, which identifies the four caliber families, all of the interchangeable LOC components are clearly labeled for quick and convenient assembly. The Dimension’s barrel, bolt, magazine and magazine housing are all marked with LOC letter designations (A,B,C,D) which, when matched and installed on the receiver, insure that the caliber marked on the barrel can then be shot from the rifle. When converting to a caliber within the same letter family, only the barrel needs to be changed.  In order to modify the rifle into a caliber outside of a letter family, the bolt, magazine group and barrel are all changed to the corresponding label.

The Dimension platform will initially be available in ten different calibers, which are categorized into four letter families. The barrels are all standard with 5R rifling, which maintains accuracy and helps to reduce copper fouling and cleaning times.

Family             Calibers                                                                        Barrel

A                     .223 Rem and .204 Ruger                                            22”

B                      .22-250 Rem, .243 Rem, 7mm-08 Rem, and .308 Win            22”

C                      .270 Win and 30-06 Sprg                                             24”

D                     7mm Rem Mag and .300 Win Mag                               24”

At the core of the system is the Dimension’s universal receiver that is based on the design commonly used for the modern sporting rifle. Engineered to accept small, medium and long action calibers, the platform’s lightweight, aluminum receiver provides precise alignment of the bolt and barrel. This innovative design helps to insure the correct headspace required, while at the same time reducing the total weight of the rifle to just 7 pounds.

“The concept behind the Dimension platform represents one of the most innovative advancements in the bolt-action rifle design in over 100 years,” said Mario Pasantes, Smith & Wesson’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Global Professional Sales. “A truly modular design, the Dimension platform has transformed the perception of what a bolt-action rifle should be. Providing seamless transitions between calibers, professional-grade performance and an exceptional value to the end user, the Dimension Bolt-Action Platform signifies a new chapter in the history of sporting firearms and Thompson/Center.”

The Dimension rifle has been fitted with an innovative universal stock, featuring a high cheek piece for a distinctive look and a comfortable feel. At the end of the butt stock, two, half-inch removable spacers provide a perfect fit for a wide range of shooters. The Dimension stock also features ARMORSOFT® coating, which adds durability and noise reduction when hunting in dense vegetation. Traction panels at the forend and grip have been added to provide a positive point of hold in any weather condition. The forend on the Dimension has also been designed to expose a totally free floated barrel with additional space to handle future calibers and barrel profiles.

For assembly and disassembly of the Dimension platform, the firearm is packaged with two innovative torque tools. Designed to work in conjunction with the LOC system, the tools help insure repeatability and consistent pounds per square inch to all installation points on the barrel torque collar, stock screws and scope mount screws. Transitioning between barrels is a simple process that can be accomplished by most users in under two minutes. Each complete rifle and accessory barrel is packaged with a detachable magazine, which provides for a capacity of 3+1 in all calibers.

As with every Thompson/Center bolt-action rifle, the Dimension is MOA (minute of angle) guaranteed, when using premium ammunition, with every barrel that is installed. Dimension Rifles are standard with factory scope mounts installed on the receiver.  A unique, magnesium LOC Bridge mount is also available separately as an accessory for each barrel. Through the use of the LOC Bridge mount, optics can be installed and left in place on each barrel in order to help return sight-in at the time of reinstallation.

The Dimension Bolt-Action Platform is available now with an MSRP of $649.  Left-Hand models are also available at the same price.  Accessory barrels have an MSRP of $199 and include the corresponding magazine group.  Bolts will have an MSRP of $129 and the Dimension receiver (includes receiver, stock and tools) will have an MSRP of $319. Current pricing allows shooters to purchase one rifle plus another barrel and bolt, essentially making two MOA rifle configurations for under $1,000.

SMITH & WESSON® INTRODUCES NEW ADDITIONS TO M&P15 RIFLE SERIES

26 Jan

Mid-Length Magpul and Viking Tactics Tactical Rifles Add Depth to Lineup

SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (January 15, 2012) –Smith & Wesson Corp. announced today that the Company has added two new models to the M&P15 Rifle Series through its collaborative efforts with Magpul® and Viking Tactics®. The M&P15 MOE Mid and M&P15 VTAC® II tactical rifles bring new design elements to the Smith & Wesson lineup. Featuring a mid-length operating system, patent-pending flash hider and numerous other performance enhancements, the new tactical rifles provide reliable and feature-rich options for professional and recreational shooters.

“Smith & Wesson is excited to offer consumers new additions to the M&P15 tactical rifle line through our strong relationships with Magpul and Viking Tactics,” said Mario Pasantes, Smith & Wesson’s Senior Vice President of Marketing and Global Professional Sales. “The new mid-length rifles expand Smith & Wesson’s advanced line of sporting firearms, while addressing consumer demands for exceptional performance and design.”

Each of the new M&P15 rifles help to diversify the Company’s current line of purpose driven centerfire rifles.

M&P15 MOE Mid

The new Magpul Spec Series of tactical rifles includes a co-branded lower receiver that is only available through Smith & Wesson. The first two rifles in the series consist of the M&P15 MOE Mid, available in black and flat dark earth configurations. Providing performance-minded shooters with a reliable option from a trusted manufacturer of modern sporting rifles, the M&P15 MOE Mid utilizes a unique mid-length system.

Based on the proven M&P15 platform, the M&P15 MOE Mid incorporates Magpul’s original equipment while delivering the accuracy and dependability that consumers have come to expect from Smith & Wesson. At the base of the rifle is a newly added mid-length operating system. Resulting in lower recoil with improved second shot probability, the M&P15 MOE Mid allows shooters the opportunity to make consecutive follow-up shots more accurately.

The new co-branded, Magpul designed forged lower receiver features a flared magazine well to help ease reloading. For improved handling, the lower is also standard with a forward serrated edge on the magazine well and an ambidextrous finger shelf that allows proper indexing of the trigger finger prior to the firing of the rifle. Shooters will also appreciate the solid one-piece integrated trigger guard design along with the rifle’s sharp design lines for improved aesthetics.

The M&P15 MOE Mid comes standard with a 16-inch 4150 CMV barrel with a 1 in 8-inch rate of twist and 5R rifling for improved accuracy. For extended durability, the rifle’s barrel has a Melonite® finish and both the bolt carrier and gas key are chrome-lined. At the end of the barrel, Smith & Wesson has added its patent-pending enhanced flash hider. Designed to significantly reduce the flash signature of the rifle, the new flash hider directs gases and sound forward away from the shooter while helping to eliminate secondary flash.

The new M&P15 MOE Mid is standard with several Magpul innovative features, which include a MOE six-position, collapsible buttstock and a modular MOE mid-length handguard. For an improved grip both near the firing control and on the forend, the rifle is setup with a comfortable MOE pistol grip and a removable MOE vertical grip (MVG). The new tactical rifle is also standard with a folding Magpul MBUS rear sight along with a traditional A2-style front sight. Each rifle is sold complete with one 30-round PMAG® magazine.

“We’re very excited about the new Smith and Wesson Magpul Spec Series of rifles,” said Drake Clark, Senior Director of Sales and Business Development for Magpul. “The integration of both Brands in this line really showcases Smith & Wesson’s manufacturing abilities and quality, while highlighting Magpul’s design capabilities and input on configuration.  Everything from the barrel specs to the sharp appearance of the lower was determined so that the rifle not only performs great, but offers a distinct look that only Smith & Wesson and Magpul can deliver.”

M&P15 VTAC II

Smith & Wesson worked closely with Kyle Lamb of Viking Tactics to design the specifications for the M&P15 VTAC II. The new tactical rifle offers reduced recoil and improved accuracy based on the mid-length system. The rifle’s 16-inch barrel is constructed of 4150 CMV steel and is standard with a 1 in 8-inch rate of twist and a Melonite® finish. The new tactical rifle features 5R rifling, which maintains accuracy and helps to reduce copper fouling and cleaning times.

“The new Smith & Wesson VTAC II is the next phase of the evolution of the combat carbine,” said Kyle Lamb. “Whether headed to the range or into harms way, the new rifle is mission ready with all the enhancements needed right out of the box. Made right here in the United States, this M&P15 is all you could ever ask for, no upgrades required.”

The M&P15 VTAC II is available with a VTAC®/Troy™ Extreme TRX Handguard that allows for quick target transitions made possible by its lightweight, ergonomic design. The new handguard also helps to reduce heat transfer, while the multiple accessory slots provide a myriad of options for mounting accessories. Each M&P15 VTAC II is packaged with two, 2-inch adjustable Picatinny-style rails for convenient mounting on the forend.

At the end of the barrel, Smith & Wesson has added its patent-pending enhanced flash hider. The new flash hider helps direct gas and sound forward away from the shooter, while reducing the rifle’s flash signature. The VTAC II lower is standard with a VLTOR® IMod six-position, collapsible stock that extends the rifle to 36.75 inches and shortens it to 33.5 inches with the stock collapsed.

For improved accuracy, the M&P15 VTAC II is standard with a Geissele® Super V Trigger. The enhanced trigger provides shooters with a light pull and quick reset for precise shot placement.  Additional VTAC branded features that are packaged with the rifle include a wide, padded two-point tactical sling along with a LPSM low profile sling mount. For illuminating targets, a VTAC light mount has been added to the setup. Each rifle is complete with a 30-round PMAG® magazine.

“The first versions of the M&P15 MOE and M&P15 VTAC were so well received by the industry and users that we quickly recognized the need for additional models,” said Danielle Sanville, Smith & Wesson’s Product Manager for Modern Sporting Rifles. “After deep discussions with both Magpul and Viking Tactics, new design specifications were created for each rifle based not only on customer feedback and research, but also on the new capabilities being offered by both companies. The end result is two new M&P15 tactical rifles that break away from the ordinary, both delivering superior quality and performance.”

VEGAS ‘ELK CAMP’ TO SUPPORT CONSERVATION IN NEVADA

26 Jan

MISSOULA, Mont.—Hunting brings $223 million in economic benefit to the State of Nevada. But you can’t have abundant game species to hunt—as well as other wildlife to watch, photograph or enjoy—without habitat stewardship and conservation. And that’s the inspiration behind Elk Camp, a hunting and conservation rally coming to Las Vegas.

RMEF LogoElk Camp is an annual public-welcome convention, expo and conservation fundraiser hosted by the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) and International Sportsmen’s Expositions.

The event is Feb. 2-4, 2012, at the Las Vegas Convention Center.

Attractions will include the 2012 RMEF/Leupold World Elk Calling Championships, plus 385 exhibiting companies in an expo hall filled with outfitted hunting and fishing opportunities, art, gear, firearms and everything outdoors. Hourly seminars will cover hunting strategies, destinations, gear, survival and fishing. Cabela’s will sponsor game-calling clinics. Organizers also are planning special activities for the whole family.

Elk Camp helps raise awareness and funding for conservation.

In 2011, RMEF passed the 6 million acre-mark in habitat conserved or enhanced for elk and other wildlife nationwide.

In Nevada alone, RMEF has completed 190 conservation projects affecting 275,870 acres. Examples include habitat stewardship projects such as prescribe burning, forest thinning and management, weed control, water improvements and many other projects, mostly on public lands. Also included are RMEF land acquisitions transferred to state or federal management agencies to secure habitat and public access in perpetuity.

It’s a conservation effort in Nevada now valued at more than $15.1 million.

Affected counties have included Clark, Elko, Humboldt, Lincoln, Nye and White Pine.

“Thanks to our volunteers in Nevada—most of whom are avid hunters—RMEF and its partners have protected or enhanced wildlife habitat across an area of Nevada that’s larger than Las Vegas, Henderson, Reno and Sparks combined,” said David Allen, RMEF president and CEO. “But there’s a ton of work left to do, and Elk Camp will help us generate the enthusiasm and resources needed to get it done.”

Thousands of RMEF supporters from across the U.S. will be in Vegas for the event.

Public admission to the Elk Camp expo is $12 per person daily, free for youth 15 and under, and free for active military with military ID.

Expo hours: Thurs., Feb. 2, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Fri., Feb. 3, 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.; Sat., Feb. 4, 9:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

The most recent federal statistics show Nevada has some 63,000 hunters who together spend over 614,000 days afield each year. In addition to hunting licenses and permits, they purchase fuel, lodging, food, equipment and more. It all adds up to $145 million in retail sales and supports more than 1,850 jobs in Nevada.

About the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation:

RMEF is leading a conservation initiative that has protected or enhanced habitat on over 6 million acres—an area larger than Yellowstone, Grand Canyon, Glacier, Yosemite, Rocky Mountain and Great Smoky Mountains national parks combined. RMEF REITERATES POSITION ON UPPER LOCHSA EXCHANGE

24 Jan

MISSOULA, Mont.—Following erroneous media reports that the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation (RMEF) opposes the Upper Lochsa land exchange project in Idaho, the conservation organization today repeated its position.

RMEF LogoRMEF supports public ownership of the Upper Lochsa lands currently being considered for transfer from Western Pacific Timber (WPT) to the U.S. Forest Service (USFS).

What RMEF has withdrawn from is a USFS/WPT/RMEF “Memorandum of Understanding” regarding the exchange. The withdrawal is based on concerns about the current alternatives proposed in the exchange process. In an earlier letter to USFS and WPT, RMEF stated, “The identified federal exchange lands in Idaho County contain very high value wildlife habitat, including significant amounts of crucial winter range for elk, which could be compromised.”

If an alternative for protecting Upper Lochsa lands is developed, which also protects wildlife habitat and public access in alignment with RMEF’s mission and members, RMEF would consider reengaging in the project.

RMEF will continue to raise funds for habitat improvement in the Upper Lochsa and other areas of Idaho’s elk country.
